Overview

Listwa Collective is a Saint Lucia-based creative collective, and soon-to-be registered nonprofit, dedicated to empowering Caribbean storytellers. Taking its name from the Kwéyòl word for history, story, and tale, the collective uses narrative as a tool for advocacy, cultural preservation, and amplifying voices across the region. Its growing body of work spans published anthologies (Tiwé Listwa and Six Feet Apart), immersive writing retreats, a documentary residency on climate and environmental justice, and audiovisual projects rooted in local history, cuisine, and memory. Led by a five-member team of writers, journalists, and cultural advocates, the collective needed a digital home that matched the ambition of its mission, unified its expanding portfolio, and gave funders and partners a clear, credible way to get involved.

The Challenge

  • A growing portfolio, no unified home: publications, retreats, residencies, documentaries, and community projects were spread across formats and platforms, with no single, cohesive place to present the full scope and momentum of the work.
  • A distinctive cultural identity to honor: the collective’s Kwéyòl roots, its decolonial and narrative-justice ethos, and its tagline, “Confronting Our Past, Narrating Our Present, Reimagining Our Future,” all needed to come through in the design rather than read as a generic template.
  • Content that changes often: new activities, publications, and video work are added regularly, so the team needed to publish and update the site themselves without depending on a developer for every change.
  • Funder and partner readiness: as a soon-to-be registered nonprofit pursuing grants, awards, and private support, the collective needed a professional presence that builds trust with funders and a clear pathway for partnership inquiries.
  • Reaching a distributed audience: with a community spanning Saint Lucia, the wider Caribbean, and the diaspora, the site had to perform on mobile and connect seamlessly to the collective’s active social channels.

The Solution

  • Content-managed architecture: a Sanity CMS backbone lets the team publish and edit activities, publications, and media themselves, so the site grows with the work rather than freezing at launch.
  • Story-first homepage: a cinematic hero carries the collective’s tagline and mission, with curated entry points into featured work, the flagship Tiwé Listwa anthology, and calls to share a story or lend support.
  • Filterable portfolio: an “Our Work” page presents the full body of work with category filters (Publications, Retreats, Residency, Documentary, Community), making a rich and varied catalog easy to navigate.
  • Publications showcase: dedicated pages for each anthology with cover art, descriptions, and page counts, plus a direct link to purchase the latest title, turning the site into both an archive and a storefront.
  • Activities and media pages: individual pages for retreats, the documentary residency, and upcoming projects, alongside embedded video features such as the tribute to cultural icon Gregory Sinaise.
  • Partner and support pathway: a purpose-built Support page with a structured inquiry form that routes funding offers, in-kind contributions, and commission requests to the team for follow-up, framed around grant and partnership readiness.
  • Team and mission storytelling: an About page with an embedded video and full team profiles that establishes credibility and puts faces to the collective’s work.
  • Audience connections: newsletter signup and integrated links to Instagram, Facebook, X, and YouTube keep the community engaged between projects.
  • Distinctive, responsive design: a fully mobile-responsive build on a modern React framework (Next.js) with optimized, next-generation WebP imagery, tuned for the collective’s predominantly mobile Caribbean and diaspora audience.
  • SEO and shareability: structured metadata across pages so every shared link renders as a rich, professional preview, improving discoverability for the collective’s stories.

Results

  • One cohesive digital home: the full breadth of the collective’s work, from anthologies to retreats to documentaries, now lives under a single, unified brand, making its impact immediately legible to visitors, funders, and collaborators.
  • A team empowered to publish: with a CMS in place, the collective updates activities, publications, and media on its own timeline, keeping the site current without ongoing developer overhead.
  • Grant and partner ready: a polished, professional presence and a structured support pathway strengthen the collective’s credibility with grant-makers, awarding bodies, and private supporters exactly where those relationships begin.
  • Culture rendered in design: the site’s Kwéyòl framing, storytelling-first structure, and considered visual identity reflect the collective’s values rather than flattening them into a stock layout.
  • Reach beyond the island: a mobile-first build and integrated social and newsletter channels help the collective engage its community across Saint Lucia, the Caribbean, and the diaspora.
